Torment follows the story of fallen angel, Daniel, and his human love Lucinda, Luce for short. It is the sequel to Fallen and seeks to answer some of the questions posed and left tantalisingly unanswered in the first book. Lucinda, however, has past lives and the two are doomed to perpetually meet, fall in love and suffer tragic consequences following this. The relationship between Daniel and Luce is highly charged, and some of the exploration of emotion is well realised and affecting. Much of the book, however, feels laborious as if groaning uneasily under the weight of its narrative and the complexities of its central questions. It reveals too little over too long a spread to be a satisfying read and leaves the reader behind.
