The Returners
Will Hodges lives in a nightmarish, dystopian future. His mother is dead and he is relentlessly pursued by groups of people claiming to know him but of whom Will has no recollection. A taut atmosphere of uncertainty pervades the novel which emphasises Will’s predicament and unease as he quests to find out who he is and his role as an individual within society.
Astute comments about individual make-up, our relationship to our past and the ways in which this is drawn upon and politicised, make this a deep and thought-provoking work that is guaranteed to leave readers thinking around the implications of its premise long after the story is finished. A convincing, yet chilling, future vision and a thoroughly engaging plot with a surprise twist make this a stand out novel for young adult readers.
